South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, has given his backing to a campaign launched by Stoney Stanton Parish Council and the Stoney Stanton Youth Club to take over a former quarry site in the centre of the village.
Alberto had been contacted by both organisations following their efforts to negotiate a land transaction for the former Carey Hill Quarry site in Stoney Stanton. The Parish Council has been in discussions with the land owners, Tarmac Ltd., for the past few years, however more recently their talks have stalled.
Alberto said, “It was a pleasure to meet representatives from both the Stoney Stanton Parish Council and the village’s Youth Club on Friday afternoon to hear about their campaign and their very exciting plans for the green space’s future. I am of course delighted to support their plans for the allocation of this green space, and I agree that it would make an excellent addition to the village and would provide a vital community hub for the people of Stoney Stanton”.
Mr Stephen Purser, Chair of Stoney Stanton Parish Council, added, “The Parish Council and the Youth Club were delighted that Mr Costa was able to spend time with us to discuss the future of the former Carey Hill Quarry site and the Parish Council’s wish to take this land over and maintain it as a public open space. We look forward to working with him to try to achieve this”.
Alberto concluded, “Tarmac have done a tremendous amount of good work in bringing this land back up to a safe standard – especially given its history as a former quarry site - however the open space is lying dormant at present and so it makes sense that this land should be used to its full potential, for the benefit of the local community. I have written to Tarmac in order to try and get negotiations back on track and I look forward to working with the Parish Council in the hope of moving forward with this matter soon”.
