South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, has called for the Government to give greater priority to the A5 and to carry out much needed improvements, such as the doubling of the carriageway.
Speaking in a Westminster Hall Debate on Wednesday afternoon (7th February) with MPs for Hinckley & Bosworth, Rugby, North Warwickshire & Bedworth and Nuneaton, Mr Costa stressed the existing burdens of heavy traffic on the A5 and made the case for the Department for Transport to add the A5 road to the Government’s ‘Roads Investment Strategy 2’ which prioritises infrastructure improvements for some of the UK’s major roads and motorways.
Alberto said, “The proposed doubling of the A5 has been a topic of discussion for many years, however now is the time to make these improvements. With the scale of development taking place, not only in my constituency of South Leicestershire, but also the rest of the Midlands, it is vital that the A5 receives the improvements it requires to keep up with development”.
Alberto concluded, “It has been a long standing concern of many of my constituents of the Fosse Villages in the very western part of my constituency, and while I have worked very closely with residents of these villages - especially those in Sharnford - constituents desperately need to see associated infrastructure improvements alongside future developments. I will continue to work closely with my Parliamentary colleagues to ensure that the A5 receives the full consideration it deserves”.
