On Thursday 30th November, South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa assisted the Secretary of State for Scotland, the Rt. Hon David Mundell MP in opening the London Stock Exchange to celebrate St Andrew’s Day.
Alberto, who is Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Cabinet Minister, was joined by the Chairman of the London Stock Exchange Mr Donald Brydon CBE.
Following a short ceremony, at 8am precisely, the London Stock Exchange was officially open for trading with a display showing in real time the world’s markets trading in a wide range of stocks and other commodities.
Alberto, said “As a Leicestershire MP, it was a great honour to take part in the opening of global trading at our country’s premier stock exchange. Leicestershire and our whole country benefits from the market opportunities opened up for our nation’s companies through the London Stock Exchange’s trading system. Specifically, the Exchange allows companies to raise money, increase their profile and obtain a market valuation helping to lubricate the engine of enterprise in the East Midlands and across Britain”.
The Secretary of State for Scotland, Mr Mundell, said “It was a special pleasure on St Andrew’s Day, to open world trading from the UK’s principal stock exchange. I was joined by my Parliamentary Private Secretary, South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa and, given it was St Andrew’s Day, we were also joined in London by Conservative MPs from across Scotland”.
Alberto, concluded “Leicestershire benefits powerfully from the opportunities that the London Stock Exchange offers to companies throughout the East Midlands. As the government pushes forward with its plans for the Midlands Engine, it was a great privilege as a local Leicestershire MP to help commence Britain’s trading on St Andrew’s Day”.
