MP for South Leicestershire, Alberto Costa, joined the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice, The Rt. Hon Dominic Raab MP, at the formal topping out ceremony of the new Glen Parva prison last week.
Alberto attended the ceremony alongside Leader of Blaby District Council, Cllr Terry Richardson, and other local dignitaries to the see new prison as it nears completion.
The new £286 million facility will house 1,700 prisoners and is being built on the site of the former HMP/YOI Glen Parva, with the new prison due to open in 2023.
The new prison is part of the Government’s Prison Building Programme to create 18,000 additional prison places with over 100 employees on site and thousands of jobs being supported in the construction industry – the new facility will also employ 600 people when open in 2023.
Alberto said, “I was delighted to visit the site of the new Glen Parva prison alongside the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, The Rt. Hon Dominic Raab MP. The new facility represents a landmark £286 million Government investment in South Leicestershire which has already helped create hundreds of new jobs and has invested over £30 million into the local economy, all of which is most welcome”.
Alberto added, “The new state of the art facility at Glen Parva will be engineered toward rehabilitating prisoners, they will all receive specialist educational courses and resources to help increase their chances of finding a job upon release in order to cut levels of reoffending. I very much look forward to seeing the construction of the new prison at Glen Parva progress as it nears its completion ahead of opening in 2023, and I should like to again thank the developers Lendlease for their excellent work”.
