South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa has written to the Police & Crime Commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland to raise concerns about recent instances of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and dangerous driving taking place on the Blaby Bypass.
Alberto has said that a large number of constituents have been in touch in recent weeks with complaints about the level of noise and reports of reckless driving from drivers who are meeting on the Bypass late on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The MP has previously met with the Leicestershire Police Area Commander for Blaby to discuss local concerns, and while Alberto has welcomed the action taken by Blaby Police in responded to complaints, he is calling for a more ‘proactive strategy’ to tackle the ASB taking place.
Alberto said, “I have been contacted by a very large number of constituents from Whetstone and Blaby in recent weeks with their concerns about the Anti-Social Behaviour and dangerous driving taking place on the Blaby Bypass. I understand that a number of car meets are taking place late on Fridays and over weekend with attendees causing disruption and allegedly racing up and down the carriageway. This type of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable, and I entirely share my constituents’ concerns about both about the level of ASB but also the reports of dangerous driving which present a serious risk to other road users.”
Alberto added, “I am most grateful to Inspector Palmer and his excellent team at Blaby Police for their response to my constituents’ complaints in recent weeks, however given that these reported instances of ASB and dangerous driving are taking place at around the same time on the same days each week, I have written to the Leicestershire Police & Crime Commissioner to ask if a proactive strategy can be put in place to deter and prevent this disruptive and dangerous behaviour before it begins. It is imperative that the Blaby Bypass remains a safe carriageway for all road users, and so I look forward to continue working closely with Leicestershire Police to address my constituents’ concerns.”
