On Friday 6th May, Alberto Costa, MP for South Leicestershire, visited Glen Hills Primary School in Glen Parva to speak to pupils and promote internet safety.
Alberto spoke as part of an internet safety campaign organised by Google and Parent Zone. The ‘Internet Legends’ campaign, carried out in co-ordination by Google and Parent Zone, aims to promote four main aspects of internet safety most relevant to children of a Primary School age; protection (passwords), considerations around sharing online, being wise to “phishing” and online scams, and most importantly respecting others online.
Alberto said, “It was a pleasure to visit Glen Hills Primary to speak to pupils and staff about internet safety, which is of course a vitally important issue. With access to the internet easier than ever, younger people have the internet at their fingertips and so it’s always important to raise awareness of how young people can use the internet both safely and responsibly.”
Vicky Shotbolt, CEO of Parent Zone, said, “We know from our work with schools and parents how important it is to give children the skills they need to stay safe as they start exploring the online world. The Google Internet Legends Tour brings this essential information to primary schools around the country. It inspires children to make the most of the opportunities offered by the internet while staying in control of their online lives. We’re very pleased that Alberto Costa MP is taking part in this important initiative to help children stay safe online”.
Alberto concluded, “I’m very grateful for the invitation to speak to the pupils earlier this morning, and I’m especially grateful to Parent Zone for organising this event. Parent Zone, in partnership with Google, have been running these events across the country for some time and I would encourage schools across the constituency and the county to take advantage of this free service to ensure pupils are properly informed on this important issue”.
