On Friday 8th July, Alberto Costa MP visited Her Majesty’s Prison and Young Offenders Institute Glen Parva in his constituency of South Leicestershire in order to tour the facility, meet inmates and the prison’s Governor, Ms Alison Clarke.
HMP Glen Parva has, since its opening in 1974, always been a borstal and has always held young offenders. Although predominantly operating as a Young Offenders Institute and Remand Centre, the facility has, at the end of June 2016, begun to take adult prisoners.
Mr Costa said, “I was very pleased to visit HMP Glen Parva earlier today in order to tour the prison grounds and meet some of the inmates currently housed at the prison. As a Member of the House of Commons Justice Select Committee I am of course very interested in the facility and especially so given the prison’s location within the constituency”.
Ms Alison Clarke, Governor of HMP Glen Parva, added, “I am delighted to welcome Alberto Costa to HMP & YOI Glen Parva to see the important work we do within his constituency. Glen Parva is a complex establishment caring for up to 708 young adults and adults with a focus on safety, decency and reducing reoffending. We deliver wide range of training and educational programmes to enhance the knowledge and skills of those in our care and I am pleased to show Mr Costa the work we do to prepare our offenders for their return to the community.”
Mr Costa concluded, “I am very thankful to Alison for allowing me to visit the facility. As part of my sitting on the Justice Select Committee I have been very keen in questioning the Ministry of Justice to ensure that HMP Glen Parva has the sufficient resources to ensure the safety of those inside the prison and the security of those outside”.
