Alberto Costa, MP for South Leicestershire, has welcomed new statistics showing the level of Government support provided to business in his constituency since the coronavirus pandemic began.
Businesses in South Leicestershire have received over £100 million worth of loans since the start of the coronavirus outbreak; this includes 2,112 Bounce Back Loans worth over £63 million which help ensure small firms who need vital cash injections can continue to keep operating with no repayments due for the first 12 months.
In addition, 154 business assistance loans worth almost £39 million have been offered to firms in South Leicestershire through the Coronavirus Business Interruption Scheme (CBILS).
The Chancellor also announced on Friday that the government’s Job Support Scheme will be expanded to protect jobs and support businesses required to close their doors as a result of coronavirus restrictions, alongside increasing the cash grants to businesses in England required to shut in local lockdowns to support with fixed costs – worth up to £3,000 per month.
So far, the Government has provided over £200 billion throughout its economic response to coronavirus to support jobs and businesses in the UK.
Alberto said, “It goes without saying that this year has been hugely challenging for businesses in South Leicestershire, but these latest figures demonstrate the scale of support that the Government has put in place to protect livelihoods and businesses. Of course, the next few months will be crucial for many businesses across the country, but the Government remains committed to ensuring that everyone has the support and assistance they need to get through this most difficult time”.
The Rt. Hon Rishi Sunak MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, added, “Our support for businesses and workers has provided a lifeline to employers up and down the country, supporting people to stay in jobs and protecting livelihoods. We will build on this as we move to the next stage of our recovery through the Winter Economy Plan, which will continue to protect jobs and help businesses through the months ahead.”
