On the evening of Wednesday 6th July, the two former MPs for Blaby/South Leicestershire – Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord Nigel Lawson of Blaby, and former Defence Minister, Lord Andrew Robathan of Poultney - came together with current South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, to formally open his new Constituency Office in Blaby.
It is believed that this is the first time in British electoral history where the former MPs and current MP of the same constituency and of the same party, stretching back over 42 years of public service, are together in the constituency.
The event, which was attended by over 50 people, gave attendees a chance to speak to the two Lords over refreshments before Lords Lawson and Robathan, alongside incumbent MP, Alberto Costa, cut the ribbon to formally open the new office.
Alberto said “I was delighted to invite Lord Lawson and Lord Robathan to formally open my new Constituency Office. The two former MPs served this constituency with pride and honour for an extraordinary length of time and I was very pleased to have them here on this momentous occasion”.
Alberto concluded, “This event has been a long time in planning, however I’m very grateful for the two Lords, who took time out of their incredibly busy schedule, to be here for the event this evening. It’s a real privilege to represent the good people of South Leicestershire and this Constituency Office which has been open since the latter part of last year allows my constituents to know that the MP has a presence within the area, and it is, of course, open to assist constituents with a wide range of queries and issues”.
