On Friday 16th September, South Leicestershire Member of Parliament, Alberto Costa visited the Bakers Arms pub in Blaby to meet with the proprietor, Chris Smart, and the Managing Director of the Leicestershire-based Everards Brewery, Stephen Gould, in order to discuss the everyday workings of the pub and the brewing industry.
Founded in 1849, Everards is a family owned, Leicestershire brewing company which produces in excess of 50,000 barrels of beer for sale across the UK.
The Bakers Arms in Blaby is one of the constituency's oldest pubs, holding it's licence since the mid-19th century, while the building itself dates back to 1485.
Alberto said, “I was delighted to visit the Bakers Arms in Blaby earlier today in order to meet with Chris and Stephen. Everards are a proud Leicestershire company, and one that I know very well, and I’m very pleased to see and hear of the excellent work they are doing in supporting pubs, not only in South Leicestershire, but across the rest of the county".
Alberto concluded, "The Bakers Arms is particularly well known in the constituency due to its long, interesting history and its reputation for fantastic food and excellent service, hence why I'm very pleased that the Government have continued their long standing commitment to pubs like the Bakers Arms by most recently, freezing, and in the last three budgets, cutting, beer duty. I am very thankful to Chris and Stephen for their time earlier today and I was particularly delighted to see Chris’ enthusiasm for running the establishment, it’s certainly a place I’ll gladly continue to frequent in the years to come”.
