On Friday 28th October, Member of Parliament for South Leicestershire, Alberto Costa met with new Leicester Mercury Editor, George Oliver, at the Mercury’s offices to discuss matters local matters, press regulation and digital publishing.
Alberto said, “ The Leicester Mercury is a real asset to local communities and is not only widely read in my constituency of South Leicestershire but also the rest of the county and so I was very eager to meet George, as the paper’s new editor, and welcome him to covering local politics and events in Leicester and Leicestershire”.
Mr Oliver added, “It was great to meet Alberto to show him around the Mercury and describe the role we have played in reporting Leicestershire life for more than 140 years. It was also a good opportunity for us to discuss issues facing the industry – particularly the recent conversation around the potential for the triggering of section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act and the effect that would have on local newspapers and their reporting.’
Alberto concluded, “I was very pleased to meet George and to bring up to speed with matters concerning the good people of South Leicestershire and to discuss other larger matters affecting the newspaper industry. The Mercury has a lot of exciting plans for the future in terms of their digital publishing and I look forward to seeing them continue their excellent coverage of local events and local people”.
