South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, has praised the new Accident and Emergency department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) following a visit and tour alongside other Leicester and Leicestershire MPs on Friday morning.
The new £48 million department, which is due to open next week, is part of a wider £320 million refurbishment of the Infirmary, deemed to be the first serious investment in the hospital’s infrastructure since the 1990s.
Alberto said, “I was delighted to visit the new Accident and Emergency department to see the exciting plans coming into fruition. I was very impressed to see the excellent facilities in place at the LRI, this is a state of the art department mainly using brand new and innovative equipment that will both cut down waiting times and most crucially, enhance patient care”.
Chief Executive of University Hospitals Leicester (UHL), John Adler, added, “"It was a pleasure to welcome Alberto and some of the other Leicestershire MPs to our new Emergency Department at the Royal Infirmary. We are proud that we have created a state of the art facility which will allow us to give our patients a better experience when they arrive needing emergency care. We look forward to welcoming our local MPs back once we have completed Phase 2 in spring 2018."
Alberto concluded, “This investment in the new A & E department, as well as the larger investment in the Infirmary, is a strong symbol of the Government’s commitment to our NHS. Ensuring that it provides a world class, efficient service that benefits not only my constituents in South Leicestershire, but residents in the wider city and county too”.
