On Thursday 1st February, South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa visited Brooke House School in Cosby in order to speak to the Politics and Current Affairs class about his role as an MP and the current political developments.
Alberto last visited the school in 2016 and was recently invited back to speak to the school's pupils about Brexit, Votes for 16 year olds and the British constitution.
Alberto said, "It's always a pleasure to visit the excellent schools in my constituency of South Leicestershire, and visiting Brooke House is certainly one of those. I am very grateful to Paul for his very kind invitation to visit the school again on Thursday morning, as ever, it was a pleasure to meet so many eager pupils and to try and answer their tricky questions!".
Brooke House Head Teacher, Mr Paul Jackson, added, "Politics and the rise of democracy are part of the school's ethos for the students of Brooke House, Cosby. Whilst the younger pupils look at the workings of the Houses of Commons and Lords through the study of the "Tower of Power," the educational booklet issued by the Parliamentary education department, our older pupils , particularly those studying GCSE History, look at the development of Democracy within the country. Topics such as the Peasants' Revolt, the Peterloo Massacre, the Chartist and Suggragette/gists movements and the various reform acts are studied in detail. We are very fortunate, therefore, for the school to welcome Alberto Costa to the school to give not only a first hand account of his life as an MP but also to reflect on major turning points on the road to Democracy-as well as answering a plethora of questions on current issues within the country and the Globe".
Alberto concluded, "I was very impressed with the brilliant knowledge of many of the pupils at Brooke House, especially on important subjects such as Votes for 16 year olds. It was a big topic of discussion during my visit and I will certainly take away some of the pupils comments and keep them in my mind for future debates in the House of Commons".
