South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, has praised the latest recruitment conference for the Blaby Youth Council as part of the Council’s efforts to encourage more young people to be involved in politics in their local area.
Over 60 students from different secondary schools attended the event where they had the opportunity to discuss local issues with their Councillors and MP. Mr Costa took part in a Q&A on a range of topics including Knife Crime, Anti-Social Behaviour and Bullying which were identified to be the top priorities for students in the district.
Alberto said, “The Blaby Youth Council Conference was a huge success, this is a brilliant way of encouraging young people to be involved in politics and matters in their area. I am so pleased that the event was well attended by a wide variety of students from different schools across the area. The students asked me some thoughtful questions about national and local issues.”
Councillor Shelia Scott, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Housing Strategy, Economic & Community Development, said: “The young people participated in a variety of debates lead by Youth Council members interacting with District Councillors. Students discussed and debated subjects which had come forward during the day. Following this, the election decisions took place by voting for their most important subjects. I am thankful to everyone that was part of this event, it is always a pleasure to work with our young people.”
Alberto added, “I am delighted to see the work that Blaby District Council are carrying out to encourage more young people to take an interest in local politics to learn more about the issues that affect them and to help shape future policy and decisions for their communities. I really hope to see some of these young people becoming councillors in the future in order to continue to make Blaby District a wonderful place to live.”
