Alberto Costa, MP for South Leicestershire, has welcomed the free Wi-Fi rollout for Blaby Town Centre businesses, shoppers and visitors.
The installation of the Wi-Fi, which will launch in the spring, will see visitors to Blaby able to save on mobile data and to learn about the latest events and offers from local businesses.
Research from Loughborough University has shown that free Wi-Fi can increase a Town Centre’s prosperity and bring positive benefits for businesses, shoppers and visitors.
Funding for the installation of the Wi-Fi has come from Blaby District Council and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership via Leicestershire County Council. The project is as part of a partnership between the County Council and District Councils to ensure Wi-Fi is available in market towns across the county.
Businesses in the town centre will be offered the opportunity to attend free awareness-raising seminars through East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) - Digital Growth Programme. The programme, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and local partners, will encourage and support SMEs to embrace digital marketing and technology to improve competitiveness and productivity.
All local businesses will have the opportunity to be involved with the Wi-Fi programme, once launched, to ensure they can maximise the opportunities available to them.
Alberto said, “It’s brilliant to see the rollout of free Wi-Fi for Blaby Town Centre, this will be a tremendous asset for the local community, visiting shoppers and of course the excellent array of businesses in the town.
“The District Council, County Council and the LLEP have done a tremendous amount of work to bring in this new service, and undoubtedly it will provide a real boost for Blaby to increase footfall in the town and encourage more shoppers to visit this lovely part of Leicestershire.”
