South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa has welcomed the award of funding grants for two ‘extraordinary’ community groups in South Leicestershire who have supported local residents throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.
Alberto's office organised the grant award through the Western Power Distribution Community Fund which provided £750 each to the Broughton Astley Volunteer Group and the Enderby Mission Church Foodbank following a call for nominations from residents in South Leicestershire.
As part of their £500,000 community grant fund, Western Power invited each of the 180 MPs in their region to formally nominate charities and local groups that could benefit from a grant of up to £1,500.
Alberto said, “Following a call for recognition from my constituents, I was delighted to formally nominate two extraordinary community groups from South Leicestershire who have made an immeasurable impact and helped local residents enormously through the pandemic.
Both the Broughton Astley Volunteer Group and the Enderby Mission Foodbank have been doing brilliant, selfless work in supporting residents throughout this most difficult time. I can’t thank Mark, Nick, Jules and everyone involved with their organisations enough for their brilliant work. I really hope this grant award will help these groups go from strength to strength, and I look forward to continue working closely with both moving forward”.
Mr Mark Barber, Co-ordinator of the Broughton Astley Volunteer Group, added, “The Broughton Astley Volunteer Group (BAVG) are delighted and honoured to receive a grant from Western Power Distribution Community Fund organised through Alberto Costa’s office. We would like to thank the local residents for nominating us for the work all the volunteers have done over the last 19 weeks. The grant will be used not only for supporting the work for vulnerable residents at this time of crisis but to enable the BAVG to support and create new social and community groups for the future as well as starting a village newsletter”.
Mr Nick Holt of the Enderby Mission Foodbank said, “The grants that have been made available to us have allowed us to grow rapidly over the past few months and provide meaningful support to households impacted by Covid-19, who had fallen through the cracks and would have otherwise struggled to put a meal on the table. The additional funding from Western Power has enabled us to provide families with ‘lunch boxes’ - designed for local families with children, containing enough supplies for lunchtime meals for a week. The families we are delivering to are extremely grateful for the support we are providing, and it wouldn’t be possible without the additional funding that has been made available to us.
