Alberto Costa, MP for South Leicestershire, has called for ‘safety review’ to be undertaken by Leicestershire County Council at Hospital Lane in Blaby following a number of recent accidents.
The road, connecting Blaby and Countesthorpe, has been the site of two recent car accidents, including one last weekend (14th November) where a car collided with a telegraph pole before crashing into a nearby ditch, leaving two occupants requiring medical attention at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and Leicester Royal Infirmary.
In a further accident earlier this month (8th November), a woman was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary after the car she was driving had rolled and come to a stop on its side.
Alberto said, “Following two very serious accidents in as many weeks, a number of constituents have contacted my office deeply concerned about the safety of Hospital Lane. As such, I have today written to Leicestershire County Council as the responsible Highway Authority to carry a safety review of the road in question in order to look into the speed limit presently in place here and to see if any further measures can be implemented to improve safety along this busy country stretch”.
Alberto added, ‘Thankfully those involved with the recent accidents at Hospital Lane have not been badly hurt, but I very much share my constituent’s concerns that a serious injury or fatality could be a risk unless the safety of the road is improved. It is hugely important that my constituents in Blaby and Countesthorpe, as well as other road users, feel safe when travelling along local roads, and therefore I look forward to Leicestershire County Council conducting the appropriate enquiries to ensure these local concerns are addressed”.
