South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, has written to Leicestershire County Council to seek a ‘long-term solution’ to persistent flooding of the highway on Hospital Lane in Blaby.
Alberto has said that his office has been contacted by a number of constituents over the Christmas period about the flooding issues on Hospital Lane close to the junction of Leicester Road, where one side of the carriageway has been flooded several times forcing vehicles onto the other side of the road.
The MP has now written to the Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Council to seek a long-term solution to the problem, after the County Council attended twice in a matter of days to clear drains that had become blocked on the road.
Alberto said, “I have today written to the Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Council to seek a long-term solution to the persistent flooding that is taking place on Hospital Lane in Blaby. A number of constituents have contacted my office deeply concerned about the ongoing flooding issues, with many alarmed at the prospect of an accident soon taking place with vehicles being forced onto the other side of the carriageway”.
Blaby District Councillor for Countesthorpe, David Findlay, added, “I am most grateful to Alberto for taking forward this important issue. Unfortunately flooding on this part of Hospital Lane has been a persistent issue for quite some time and I entirely share the concerns of local residents and our MP in having this matter resolved as soon as possible”.
Alberto concluded, “My office was contacted by constituents before Christmas about the flooding, and we were successful in having the nearby drains unblocked, however they then blocked again a day later. While I am grateful to Highways staff for clearing the drains in question, this is only proving to be an ineffective short-term fix. Instead, I am now asking the County Council to put find a longer-term solution that will ultimately save them money and resources in the future by not having to attend to the drains here quite so often. With further heavy rains forecast in January, it is hugely important that Hospital Lane remains safe for all road users so I will continue to press this issue”.
