South Leicestershire MP, Alberto Costa, has welcomed a commitment by Leicestershire County Council to take action in addressing the persistent flooding of Hospital Lane in Blaby.
Alberto recently wrote to the Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Council, following a number of serious concerns being raised by constituents about the flooding on Hospital Lane close to the junction of Leicester Road.
The MP has now received a commitment from the County Council to replace part of the culverted watercourse on the road and to create a new ditch on the highway verge to assist with drainage overflow, subject to agreement from the land owner where part of the existing drainage sits.
Alberto said, “I very much welcome the positive action that Leicestershire County Council have agreed to take in finding a long term solution to the persistent flooding of Hospital Lane in Blaby. With the heavy rain we have seen throughout this winter, my constituents were understandably concerned with the volume of water on this busy road, especially on the approach to a busy junction, so I am delighted that works will soon be undertaken to improve safety here for all road users”.
Leicestershire County Councillor for Cosby & Countesthorpe, Les Phillimore added, “Hospital Lane is a key commuter route between Countesthorpe, the wider south Leicestershire communities and Blaby village. The flooding on Hospital Lane has been a concern to drivers for some time and I am delighted to see such a positive response to the approach to Leicestershire County Council by Alberto Costa MP on behalf of concerned South Leicestershire residents. Leicestershire has one of the best maintained road networks in the UK and I am delighted to see this proactive and decisive response which demonstrates the County Councils commitment to maintaining a high quality and safe road network”.
Alberto concluded, “The drainage on this part of Hospital Lane appears to be fairly complex, given the old Network Rail drainage which sits close by, however I am very grateful to the Highways Team at Leicestershire County Council for undertaking a full investigation into finding the cause of the flooding. I look forward to the repair works beginning in earnest to make Hospital Lane safer for all concerned”.
