South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa hosted a Parliamentary drop-in for World Oceans Day earlier this week, inviting Parliamentarians to learn more about plastic pollution and the damaging effects of microplastics in rivers and oceans.
The event was organised by Alberto, as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Microplastics, and he was joined by the Women’s Institute and the Marine Conservation Society as they spoke to MPs to raise awareness of the causes of microplastic pollution as well as potential solutions such as Alberto’s Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill.
Alberto said, “Microplastic pollution is one of many environmental concerns that parliamentarians have. It was great to hear about the work many MPs and their constituents are doing to raise awareness of this issue as well discuss the potential solutions to this problem.”
Alberto added, “It was wonderful to have the Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Thérèse Coffey, join us to discuss microplastic pollution, as well as the work her Department are doing in this area, with members of the Women’s Institute and the Marine Conservation Society.”
